FAQs
Should I comment on posts here?
Not really, because the author most likely won’t see it. If the original article has a comment form, use that instead.
Should I add some descriptive text, or just post links?
To be honest, the link alone is enough. But if you feel the desire to add some descriptive text, feel free to do so. Add it beneath the link.
What Gets Posted, the Title or the link in the Body?
The link in the body is the only thing that appears. If I knew how to hide the title field, I would. Unfortunately, I’m not sure how to do that.
Can we vote?
Unlike the first version of Writer River, voting isn’t a feature of this version. This version is more like Twitter than Digg. In the first implementation, not many people voted anyway. Also, there is no migration of articles from page to another. The latest 20 posts simply appear on the home page.
Should I add links to my own content?
You can add any links you want, but it looks a little low-class if you’re always adding links to yourself and no one else.
Why did you create this site?
After reading a good post or article online, don’t you want to let others know about it? If dozens of people are sharing good links (”human aggregation”), the quality of information you can find online significantly increases. You can read more about why I created this site here: “Caught in the Current of Writer River: Building and Participating in Community-Driven Websites.”
How did you create this site?
This is a WordPress self-hosted blog using a slightly tweaked version of the Prologue theme. It also incorporates the Sidebar Login plugin.
What happened to the old site?
Spam and hackers brought it down. Pligg, the software used to create it, is still maturing.
Why don’t you transfer the user names and posts from the old site?
I don’t know an easy way to do that, and manually it’d take a lot of work. This site offers more profile possibilities, so you’ll need to update your profiles anyway. Sorry, I may eventually do that. I’m not sure.
Who created this site?
Me, Tom Johnson. I’m a senior technical writer based in Salt Lake City, Utah. You can read more about me on my blog, Idratherbewriting.com.
